Steering Hydraulic Cylinder

Restore precise control and job-site safety with our heavy-duty AWP steering hydraulic cylinder. As a specialist manufacturer, we engineer OEM-quality replacement cylinders that guarantee perfect fitment and function for all major boom and scissor lift brands. Our cylinders are built for durability, featuring hard-chrome rods and high-performance seals for smooth, responsive, and leak-free steering. Trust our 100% tested cylinders for the reliability you need in rough-terrain environments.

What are Steering Hydraulic Cylinders?

The AWP steering hydraulic cylinder is a double-acting or double-rod hydraulic actuator and is a core component of the AWP steering system.

Its specific function is to convert the pressurized hydraulic fluid controlled by the operator via the steering wheel or joystick into the required mechanical linear force to push and pull the steering knuckles. This action rotates the machine's wheels, enabling left and right steering. Unlike the simple power assist systems in cars, this is typically a fully hydraulic steering system, with the hydraulic cylinder providing 100% of the force, sufficient to overcome the weight of the machine and the high friction of large off-road tires.

Advantages of the Steering Hydraulic Cylinder

  • High Steering Force: AWPs are very heavy. The hydraulic cylinder provides immense torque, allowing the wheels to turn easily, especially on soft ground or while stationary.
  • Precise Control: They provide smooth, responsive control, which is crucial for precisely positioning large machines in tight, congested construction sites.
  • Enabling Advanced Steering Modes: This is a key advantage. Hydraulic steering makes complex steering geometries possible, such as front-wheel steering, four-wheel coordinated steering (for smaller turning radii), and crab steering (for lateral movement).
  • Durability and Reliability: The system is sealed and robust, with fewer mechanical connections than traditional steering boxes. This makes it effectively resistant to damage from mud, water, and debris commonly found on construction sites.Floating Hydraulic Cylinder

Working Principle of the Steering Hydraulic Cylinder

Operator Input: The operator turns the steering wheel, which is connected to a component called a steering orbit valve.

Fluid Distribution: This orbit valve is a rotary valve that "meters" a precise volume of hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic pump based on the degree to which the operator turns the steering wheel.

Hydraulic Cylinder Actuation: This valve directs the pressurized fluid to the steering hydraulic cylinder.

Dual Cylinder System: For example, when turning right, fluid is directed to the "extend" port of the right-side cylinder (pushing its wheel) and the "retract" port of the left-side cylinder (pulling its wheel). Double-rod cylinder system: Uses a single cylinder with piston rods extending from both ends. Fluid injected into one side pushes the entire piston rod assembly, simultaneously pushing one steering knuckle and pulling the other.

Steering Linkage Mechanism: The cylinder is connected to the steering knuckle via a tie rod, and this push/pull force causes the wheels to turn. This system provides equal force and speed in both directions.

Applications of the Steering Hydraulic Cylinder?

Steering cylinders are standard equipment on most self-propelled aerial work platforms (AWPs) designed to improve maneuverability on the job site. You won't find them on small, flat-deck scissor lifts, which typically use electric drive motors for steering.

Articulating boom lifts (all sizes)

Telescopic boom lifts (all sizes)

Rough terrain scissor lifts

Telescopic forklifts (common with many AWP chassis and axle components)

How to Choose the Right Steering Hydraulic Cylinder

Use the OEM part number: The safest and most accurate method is to look up the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part number. This part number is usually printed on the cylinder body or can be found in the AWP's service manual.

Use the machine model and serial number: If you cannot find the part number, please provide us with the complete machine model and serial number. We can use this information to determine the specific cylinder required.

Check for integrated valves: Many AWP steering cylinders have special cushioning or damping valves built in. These valves are used to absorb sudden shocks and prevent them from being transmitted to the operator's steering wheel. If the original cylinder has these valves, ensure your replacement also has them.

Match specifications (for custom applications): If you are an OEM designing a new system, you must specify:

Type: Double-acting or double-rod.

Bore, piston rod diameter, and stroke: Used to calculate force and stroke.

Mounting type: Clevis, pin eye, or trunnion (must perfectly match the axle mounting). Operating pressure: Ensure it matches the AWP's hydraulic system.
