What are support hydraulic cylinders?

An AWP lifting hydraulic cylinder is a heavy-duty hydraulic actuator that provides the primary power for lifting the main structure and operating platform of the machine.

Unlike the support (outrigger) cylinders used to stabilize the machine, lifting cylinders are designed for dynamic, repetitive motion. They are the "muscles" that actually perform the work of lifting and lowering the load.

On scissor lifts, these are the large, powerful cylinders that push the scissor arm assembly apart, causing the platform to rise and fall vertically.

On boom lifts, this is the "boom lift cylinder," the main cylinder located at the base of the machine that rotates the entire boom assembly upward from its stowed position.

How Do Lifting Hydraulic Cylinders Work?

  • Lifting (Extension): The operator activates the "lift" control. The AWP's hydraulic pump pumps high-pressure oil into the bottom of the lifting cylinder. This pressure acts on the piston face, pushing the piston rod out (extending it) with immense force, thus lifting the boom or scissor arm assembly.
  • Lowering (Retraction): The operator activates the "lower" control. No hydraulic oil is pumped in at this point; instead, a valve is opened, allowing the weight of the platform and boom to push the hydraulic oil out of the cylinder.
  • Safety Component: This return flow is controlled by a counterbalance valve (or load-holding valve). This valve is crucial:
  • It prevents the platform from "free-falling" or descending too quickly. If a hydraulic hose bursts, it will "lock" the cylinder, preventing catastrophic failure and keeping the platform stable.

Applications of Lifting Hydraulic Cylinders?

  1. Scissor lift platforms: These are the main cylinders (usually one or two) located at the base, responsible for the vertical lifting of the platform.
  2. Boom lift platforms (telescopic and articulated): They are used as "main lift" or "boom lift" cylinders, allowing the entire boom assembly to swing up and down.
  3. Truck-mounted boom lift platforms: The main cylinder is used to lift the boom from the truck chassis.
  4. Vertical mast lift platforms: The cylinder is responsible for lifting the mast section.
