Floating hydraulic cylinders
As a premier hydraulic cylinder manufacturer, we specialize in custom-engineered floating hydraulic cylinders built for demanding mobile and industrial applications. Our designs utilize high-performance spherical bearings, trunnion, and clevis mounts to absorb misalignment and protect your equipment. With hard-chrome rods, high-pressure seals, and a focus on durability, our cylinders deliver the reliable, long-lasting performance that reduces your downtime and maintenance costs. Trust us to build the precise, heavy-duty solution you need.
What are floating hydraulic cylinders?
A floating hydraulic cylinder is a type of hydraulic actuator that is not rigidly fixed to its mounting point or the load it drives. Instead, it uses a non-rigid mounting method, allowing the cylinder to "float" or pivot.
The main purpose of this design is to compensate for misalignment. In many machines, the trajectory of the load and the mounting point of the hydraulic cylinder are not perfectly parallel or stationary. The floating design allows the cylinder to pivot and self-align, preventing the destructive forces known as side loads.
Side loads are one of the main causes of premature hydraulic cylinder failure because they place immense stress on the piston rod, seals, and bearings, leading to leaks and piston rod bending.

Applications Of Floating Hydraulic Cylinder
- Mobile and Construction Equipment: This is the most common application. The boom, arm, and bucket cylinders on excavators, loaders, and bulldozers are all mounted using U-pins and pivot pins to allow for "floating" to accommodate multi-axis arc motion.
- Scissor Lifts and Aerial Work Platforms: The main lifting cylinders typically use trunnion mounts or spherical bearings to accommodate the complex forces and deformations generated when the platform is raised.
- Telescopic Arm Synchronous Control: Automatically compensates for length changes during the telescoping process;Ensures smooth and synchronized movement of multiple arm segments; Maintains structural alignment under varying load conditions
- Load Compensation: Adapts to structural deformation caused by different load weights; Reduces stress concentration at the extension arm position; Provides stable platform support during dynamic motion
- Alignment Compensation: Adapts to manufacturing tolerances and wear of the arm structure; Prevents jamming in complex telescoping systems; Maintains optimal force distribution, ensuring even stress on all mounting points

How to select a suitable floating hydraulic cylinder?
Determine the Mounting Type: This is the most critical factor.
- U-pin Mount (Pin Eye): The base has a U-pin, and the rod end has a pin eye. Allows for simple single-axis pivoting. Best suited for arc motion.
- Trunnion Mount: The cylinder body is connected with two pivots (trunnions), allowing the entire cylinder to swing. This is ideal for long-stroke applications that require supporting the cylinder's own weight.
- Spherical Bearing: This is the most powerful type, typically integrated into the "eyes" at the cylinder head and piston rod ends. They can compensate for multi-axis misalignment (e.g., when the load is simultaneously pivoting and slightly twisting). They are the ultimate solution for preventing side loads.
- Quantify the Misalignment: How much will the load pivot? Is it a few degrees of arc motion (U-pin) or complex multi-axis displacement (spherical bearing)?
- Load and Force: Calculate the required force (cylinder bore) and pressure rating. Floating cylinders do not change these basic requirements.
- Piston Rod End: The piston rod end is just as important as the base mount. Using a rigid piston rod end with a floating base mount is a common mistake. Ensure the rod end also has a U-joint, spherical bearing, or other pivot. Limit tube (long stroke): For horizontally mounted long-stroke cylinders, an internal "limit tube" (spacer) may be required to prevent the piston rod from sagging due to its own weight, which is a spontaneously generated lateral load.
