How do Side shift hydraulic cylinders work?
The side shift cylinder is a double-acting cylinder, meaning it can be driven in both directions to provide movement.
Moving to the right: The operator uses a specific lever in the cab to direct pressurized hydraulic fluid from the forklift's hydraulic pump into the "extend" port of the cylinder. This pressure acts on the piston, forcing the piston rod to extend. The cylinder is mounted between the fixed and movable fork carriages, so when the piston rod extends, it pushes the fork carriage to one side.
Moving to the left: When the operator moves the lever in the opposite direction, hydraulic fluid is directed into the "retract" port. This pushes the piston in the reverse direction, causing the piston rod to retract and pulling the fork carriage to the left.
Side Shift Hydraulic Cylinders Maintenance Practices
Proper maintenance is crucial to ensuring safety and preventing costly downtime:
- Daily Visual Inspection: Before operation, the operator should check the cylinder, hoses, or fittings for any visible hydraulic fluid leaks.
- Check for Physical Damage: Inspect the cylinder body for dents and, more importantly, check the chrome-plated piston rod for any scratches, nicks, or rust. A damaged piston rod will quickly damage the seals, leading to leaks.
- Keep Clean: The piston rod should be kept clean, free from dirt, debris, ropes, or plastic packaging. When the piston rod retracts, it will carry this debris into the cylinder, damaging the wiper seal and piston rod seal.
- Secure Mounting: Regularly check that the cylinder's mounting pins and fasteners are secure and show no signs of excessive wear.
- Smooth Operation: During use, the side shift mechanism should move smoothly. Any jerky or hesitant movement may indicate air in the system, insufficient hydraulic fluid, or internal seal problems.
