What is a forklift lifting cylinder?
A forklift lifting hydraulic cylinder, often also called a mast cylinder or lifting cylinder, is the main component responsible for the vertical movement of the forklift mast and forks. It is a linear actuator that converts hydraulic fluid power into the force required to lift and lower heavy loads.
Unlike standard single-rod cylinders, lifting cylinders are typically complex multi-stage telescopic cylinders. This design is crucial for forklifts because it allows the forks to reach high lifting heights while also enabling the entire mast structure to retract to a low collapsed height, allowing the forklift to pass through standard doorways or enter containers.

Forklift Lifting Hydraulic Cylinder Working Principle
The forklift's lift cycle begins when the hydraulic pump sends pressurized oil to the lift cylinder. For multi-stage masts, oil first extends the inner free-lift cylinder, raising the carriage. Once fully extended, oil flows to the main cylinders, sequentially extending the larger mast sections.
Lowering is initiated by opening a control valve. The load's weight then forces the oil out of the cylinders and back into the reservoir. A flow control valve within the circuit ensures the descent is safe and controlled at all times.
