High-Temperature Nickel-Plated Hydraulic Cylinders
for Converter Taphole Control Systems
The ultimate defense against slag corrosion and radiant heat. Engineered with Q345D welded architecture for the most critical zone of the steel mill.
Surviving the Red Zone: The Taphole Challenge
The area immediately surrounding the converter taphole is arguably the most hostile environment for hydraulic components within the entire integrated steelworks. The operational reality is brutal: as the vessel tilts to tap molten steel at 1650°C, the hydraulic cylinders responsible for operating the slag stopper or slide gate are exposed to intense radiant heat, splashes of corrosive molten slag, and an atmosphere thick with metallic dust and sulfurous gases. Standard general-purpose cylinders are simply not engineered for this survival test.
The failure of a taphole control cylinder has catastrophic downstream effects. If the slag stopper fails to close precisely due to a seized rod or blown seal, slag carryover into the ladle increases, compromising the secondary metallurgy process and degrading the final steel quality. Conventional chrome-plated rods pit and corrode rapidly in this sulfur-heavy environment, leading to seal shredding and hydraulic fluid leaks that pose a significant fire hazard. We have re-engineered the actuator from the molecular level up, utilizing a Q345D Welded Structure and advanced Nickel Surface Treatment to ensure reliable operation where others fail.

Engineering the Solution: Q345D & Nickel
Why Q345D Welded Structure?
The choice of Q345D (equivalent to S355J2) is deliberate. While the operating environment is hot, the mechanical shocks transmitted through the linkage during the “slam shut” operation of the slag stopper are immense. Q345D provides superior low-temperature impact toughness (-20°C) compared to standard construction steels. This ensures that the welded trunnions and ports do not develop fatigue cracks under the cyclic stress of the converter’s tilting motion, providing a robust structural backbone that maintains alignment year after year.
The Nickel Plating Advantage
In the presence of sulfur dioxide and high humidity, standard chrome plating suffers from “pitting corrosion.” Once the substrate is exposed, the chrome flakes off, turning the rod into a rasp that destroys seals. We utilize High-Phosphorus Electroless Nickel Plating. This coating is amorphous (non-crystalline), meaning it has no grain boundaries for corrosion to attack. It provides a harder, smoother, and chemically inert surface that sheds slag and resists the corrosive atmosphere of the BOF hood, extending rod life by up to 300%.
High-Temp Sealing Matrix
External cooling is not always sufficient. We equip these cylinders with a specialized Viton (FKM) and PTFE sealing system. Viton retains its elastomeric properties at temperatures up to 200°C, ensuring that even if the ambient cooling fails momentarily, the cylinder will not leak. Furthermore, we install heavy-duty metallic scrapers (wipers) that physically shear off any solidified steel droplets from the rod before they can retract into the gland, preserving the integrity of the primary pressure seal.
Precision Control for Cleaner Steel
Our cylinders are not just durable; they are precise. The low-friction characteristics of the Nickel-plated rod combined with our low-stick-slip seal configuration allow for fine control of the taphole gate. This precision is critical for the “slag cutting” phase, ensuring the gate closes exactly when the slag detection system triggers, maximizing yield while minimizing impurity carryover.
- Service Life: Designed for >1 million cycles under load.
- Corrosion Resistance: NSS Test > 1000 Hours rating.
- Maintenance: Modular gland design for easy seal replacement in situ.

Versatile BOF Applications
Beyond the taphole slide gate, this cylinder architecture is perfectly suited for other high-exposure tasks within the BOF and EAF ecosystem. The Q345D construction is ideal for Deslagging Machine Arms, where mechanical shock is prevalent. The Nickel-plated rod option is also frequently deployed in Hood Cooling Water Valve Control cylinders, where humidity and steam cause rapid oxidation of standard components. Standardization of this robust design across the melt shop simplifies spare parts inventory and training.
The Pohang Steelworks Upgrade
Eliminating downtime in one of the world’s most productive steel mills.
The Challenge
A Tier-1 steel producer in South Korea faced persistent issues with their No. 3 Converter taphole cylinders. The combination of corrosive slag splash and steam from the cooling system was causing the chrome-plated rods to peel within 12 weeks, leading to seal failure and oil contamination in the ladle.
The Solution
Ever Power implemented a custom retrofit using our Model-TP Nickel Series. We upgraded the rod material to 42CrMo with 50-micron Electroless Nickel plating and installed a high-temp scraper seal. The cylinder body was fabricated from Q345D to improved weld fatigue resistance.
The Outcome
The replacement cylinders have now surpassed 14 months of continuous operation without leakage. The maintenance team reports a 75% reduction in unplanned interventions for the taphole system.
