The tilting mechanism of a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) or Converter is arguably the most critical hydraulic application in a steel mill. The stakes are incredibly high. These massive cylinders must generate enormous torque to rotate the vessel for charging scrap, tapping molten steel, and dumping slag. They operate in an environment that is hostile to machinery: ambient temperatures spiking near 100°C, direct radiant heat from the melt, and conductive metallic dust that acts as a grinding paste.
Conventional welded cylinders often fail under these conditions. The Architecture of Resilience
Forged, Not Rolled
Standard large-bore cylinders are often made from rolled plates bent and welded. For converter tilting, this is a liability. Our barrels are forged from a single ingot of 42CrMo steel. This ensures that the hoop stress generated by pressure spikes during the “slag splashing” phase is contained by a homogeneous material structure, eliminating the risk of catastrophic seam rupture.
Heavy Trunnion Integration
The connection point to the converter drive system sees immense shear forces. We do not simply weld trunnions onto the barrel surface. Our trunnions are either forged integrally with the barrel or attached using a proprietary deep-penetration welding process followed by ultrasonic stress relief. This ensures the load is distributed evenly into the cylinder body.

Chrome plating is susceptible to micro-cracking at high temperatures. We utilize Electroless Nickel or Laser Cladding technologies for the piston rods. Nickel offers superior ductility and resistance to the sulfur-rich atmosphere of the melt shop, preventing the rod surface from flaking and destroying the wiper seals.
