Mastering the Double-Acting Telescopic Challenge

Designing a multi-stage cylinder that powers both up and down is an engineering feat. In mast erection, gravity cannot be relied upon for retraction, especially when the mast is near horizontal or when precise positioning is required during assembly. We implement a sophisticated internal porting design where hydraulic fluid travels through concentric tubes to reach the piston side of even the smallest stage. This ensures positive retraction force across all stages, eliminating the risk of a stage “hanging up” during the lowering sequence.

The greatest threat to these long-stroke cylinders is eccentric loading (buckling). As the mast extends, the center of gravity shifts, and wind loads act as a lever arm.
