Hydraulic Cylinders for TBM Shield Machine Segment Assembly Systems
The precision “hands” of the Iron Mole. Engineered with 42CrMo Alloy and Nickel-Chrome plating to master eccentric loads in the world’s toughest tunnels.
Deep beneath the urban sprawl, where the geological pressures are immense and the margin for error is measured in microns, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operates as a self-contained factory. Within this complex mechanical ecosystem, the Segment Assembly Hydraulic Cylinder (often called the Erector Cylinder) performs a task of balletic precision under brutal conditions. It is responsible for lifting, positioning, and holding the heavy precast concrete segments that form the tunnel lining. Unlike the main thrust cylinders which primarily push forward, the segment assembly cylinders must handle complex multi-axis movements, enduring severe eccentric loading (side loads) as they manipulate segments weighing several tons into place to form a perfect ring.
Drawing on over 18 years of fluid power experience in heavy infrastructure, we have identified that standard hydraulic actuators simply cannot survive the TBM tail skin environment. The combination of abrasive cement grout, high humidity, and the physical shock of segment placement leads to rapid seal failure and rod scoring in generic cylinders. Our solution represents a paradigm shift in material science. We utilize customized hydraulic solutions featuring 42CrMo quenched and tempered alloy steel, reinforced with a specialized **Nickel-Chrome (Ni-Cr) plating matrix**. This design ensures that the cylinder retains structural rigidity even when fully extended under a bias load, safeguarding the safety of the assembly process and the structural integrity of the tunnel itself.

Engineered for the Eccentric: Technical Superiority
42CrMo Alloy Structure
Standard Q345 steel is insufficient for the bending moments experienced during segment positioning. We use 42CrMo (AISI 4140) alloy steel, heat-treated to maximize yield strength. This ensures the cylinder rod resists deformation when lifting a 6-ton segment at a non-vertical angle, preventing “rod bowing” that destroys seals.
Nickel-Chrome Protection
The environment inside a TBM is wet and alkaline. Our rods undergo a dual-layer plating process: a base layer of semi-bright Nickel followed by a hard Chrome layer. This “Ni-Cr” combination offers superior corrosion resistance compared to standard chrome, virtually eliminating pitting caused by cement splash and acidic groundwater.
Wide Guide Ring System
To combat the immense radial forces (side loads), we integrate extra-wide guide rings made from high-load phenolic fabric composites on the piston. This increases the contact area, distributing the lateral force evenly and preventing metal-to-metal contact between the piston and the barrel, significantly extending service life.

Case Study: The Metro Expansion Project – South East Asia
Utmaningen: A major subway expansion in a coastal city faced severe delays. The TBM’s original erector cylinders were failing every 300 rings due to the highly corrosive saltwater ingress and the abrasive silicate dust. The seals were degrading, causing segments to drift during installation, creating safety hazards.
Lösningen: Ever Power engineered a retrofit kit featuring our Ni-Cr plated 42CrMo cylinders. We customized the mounting ears to fit the existing Herrenknecht machine and upgraded the wiper seals to an aggressive double-lip scraper design to handle the grout.
“The stability of the segment placement improved immediately. We went from monthly seal replacements to completing the entire 5km drive without a single hydraulic failure. The custom plating held up perfectly against the salt.”
