Within this complex mechanical ecosystem, the Segment Assembly Hydraulic Cylinder (often called the Erector Cylinder) performs a task of balletic precision under brutal conditions. It is responsible for lifting, positioning, and holding the heavy precast concrete segments that form the tunnel lining. Unlike the main thrust cylinders which primarily push forward, the segment assembly cylinders must handle complex multi-axis movements, enduring severe eccentric loading (side loads) as they manipulate segments weighing several tons into place to form a perfect ring.<\/p>\n

Drawing on over 18 years of fluid power experience in heavy infrastructure, we have identified that standard hydraulic actuators simply cannot survive the TBM tail skin environment. The combination of abrasive cement grout, high humidity, and the physical shock of segment placement leads to rapid seal failure and rod scoring in generic cylinders. Our solution represents a paradigm shift in material science. We utilize customized hydraulic solutions<\/a> featuring 42CrMo quenched and tempered alloy steel, reinforced with a specialized **Nickel-Chrome (Ni-Cr) plating matrix**. 42CrMo Alloy Structure<\/h3>\n

Standard Q345 steel is insufficient for the bending moments experienced during segment positioning. We use 42CrMo (AISI 4140) alloy steel, heat-treated to maximize yield strength. This ensures the cylinder rod resists deformation when lifting a 6-ton segment at a non-vertical angle, preventing “rod bowing” that destroys seals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nickel-Chrome Protection<\/h3>\n

The environment inside a TBM is wet and alkaline. Our rods undergo a dual-layer plating process: a base layer of semi-bright Nickel followed by a hard Chrome layer.
