Precision Thrust: High-Pressure Servo Hydraulic Cylinders for TBM Main Propulsion Systems
Engineering the heartbeat of subterranean excavation with 42CrMo forged precision and synchronous servo control.
Orchestrating Megatons of Underground Force
The modern Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is a marvel of geotechnical engineering, effectively a mobile factory that excavates, supports, and lines tunnels simultaneously. The success of any tunneling project, whether for high-speed rail, metro systems, or water conveyance, hinges entirely on the TBM’s ability to advance consistently through unpredictable geology. The primary driver of this advancement is the main propulsion system—a bank of hydraulic cylinders that must exert thousands of tons of thrust while maintaining millimeter-level steering precision.
Bij Eeuwige Kracht, our engineering philosophy treats the propulsion cylinder not as a simple actuator, but as a precision instrument operating in a hostile environment. We utilize advanced 42CrMo steel forging techniques to create cylinders that resist the immense radial and axial fatigue loads generated during the “regrip” and “thrust” cycles. Unlike standard excavation cylinders, TBM propulsion units require sophisticated servo-integration to ensure synchronous extension. If one cylinder lags or leads, the entire shield can drift off the drive axis, causing catastrophic alignment errors. Our 18-year legacy in fluid power has been dedicated to perfecting this balance of brute force and digital control.

The Science of 42CrMo & Thick-Walled Forging
Standard ST52 or Q345B steel tubing is often insufficient for the extreme pressures (up to 50MPa peak) encountered in deep-earth tunneling. Under such loads, standard barrels can experience “ballooning”—micro-elastic deformation that increases the clearance between the piston seal and the barrel wall, leading to seal extrusion and internal bypass. To combat this, we manufacture our TBM propulsion cylinders using 42CrMo (Chromoly) alloy steel forgings.
The forging process aligns the grain structure of the steel, significantly enhancing its fatigue life and impact resistance. This is critical for TBMs, which generate massive vibrations as the cutterhead breaks through rock. We employ a thick-walled design philosophy, ensuring that the hoop stress remains well within the elastic limit even during pressure spikes caused by sudden geological blockages.
Furthermore, the synchronization requirement dictates the use of integrated linear displacement transducers (LDTs). Our cylinders are designed with internal gun-drilled piston rods to house magnetostrictive sensors, providing real-time position feedback to the TBM’s PLC. This closed-loop servo control allows for “Speed Mode” (synchronized advance) and “Pressure Mode” (balanced thrust), essential for maintaining tunnel segment integrity.
Engineering Advantages
Double-Acting Servo Precision
Equipped with high-fidelity position sensors protected within the rod. Achieves synchronization errors of less than ±2mm across a bank of 20+ cylinders.
Mud & Slurry Defense
Features a proprietary multi-lip sealing system compatible with corrosive groundwater and abrasive bentonite slurry. Includes specialized ice-scraper wipers for extreme environments.
Surface Armoring
Piston rods undergo quenching, tempering, and double-layer chrome plating (Ni-Cr) to withstand the “sandblasting” effect of tunnel dust. Surface hardness exceeds HV900.
Bolvormige articulatie
Both rod and cap ends feature maintenance-free spherical bearings (GE series) to accommodate the non-linear loads and slight twisting of the TBM shield during steering.

Client Success: The Cross-Harbor Metro Expansion
De uitdaging
A prominent international infrastructure group secured a contract for a metro line extension involving a sub-sea tunnel. The geology was notoriously difficult: mixed-face ground conditions with hard granite on top and soft marine clay below. This created uneven resistance on the cutterhead, causing the existing OEM cylinders to experience “stick-slip” phenomena, making steering impossible and risking segment damage.
De oplossing
We hebben een retrofit-oplossing ontwikkeld met behulp van onze 42CrMo High-Flow Servo Cylinders. We customized the porting to allow for rapid oil evacuation during retraction and integrated high-resolution magnetostrictive sensors. The cylinders were designed with a safety factor of 4:1 to handle the erratic shock loads from the granite face.
Het resultaat
The TBM achieved a steady advance rate of 12 meters per day, even in the mixed-face zone. The precise pressure control allowed the operators to balance the thrust forces, preventing the shield from diving into the soft clay.

“The synchronization we achieved with these cylinders was flawless. We reduced our segment cracking rate to near zero.”
— Jian Wei, Senior Project Manager
“Sourcing custom forged cylinders usually takes months. Ever Power delivered the full shipset in 45 days, keeping us on schedule.”
— Michael T., Procurement Lead
“The seal durability is impressive. We opened the maintenance chamber after 2km of tunneling, and the rods looked brand new.”
— Rajeev S., TBM Maintenance Engineer
