Precision Servo Hydraulic Cylinders for Rolling Mill Roll Gap Adjustment (AGC)

Achieving Micron-Level Tolerance in High-Speed Metallurgical Processes through Advanced Hydraulic Actuation.

The Heart of Modern Gauge Control

In the unforgiving environment of modern steel production, the Rolling Mill Stand represents the pinnacle of mechanical stress and control requirements. The defining metric of quality for flat-rolled products—whether hot rolled coil, cold rolled sheet, or aluminum foil—is gauge consistency. The Hydraulic Roll Gap Control (AGC) Cylinder is the primary actuator responsible for maintaining this consistency against the tremendous separating forces generated during plastic deformation of the metal. Unlike standard linear actuators, these components must function as high-frequency servo-systems, capable of making position adjustments in the range of milliseconds to compensate for mill stretch, roll thermal expansion, and incoming strip hardness variations.

We approach the design of these cylinders with a philosophy rooted in “Stiffness” and “Response.” A typical rolling mill cylinder must operate at pressures often exceeding 280 bar while integrating sensitive electronic feedback devices like Magnetostrictive Linear Displacement Transducers (LVDT/MDT). The structural integrity must be absolute; any elasticity in the cylinder body translates directly to gauge error in the final product. Therefore, we utilize a heavy-duty welded alloy steel construction rather than tie-rods, ensuring maximum rigidity and fatigue resistance under the cyclic loading conditions characteristic of reversing mills and tandem cold mills.

Heavy duty AGC hydraulic cylinder for steel rolling mill

Engineering the “Zero-Drift” Actuator

Friction Management & Hysteresis

In a servo-hydraulic system, friction is the enemy of precision. High “stick-slip” properties in seals lead to control hysteresis, where the cylinder creates a lag between the command signal and the physical movement. For our hydraulic cylinder solutions, we employ specialized low-friction PTFE-Bronze composite seals (such as Glyd Rings) combined with hydrodynamic bearing bands. This configuration ensures that the breakout friction is minimal, allowing the cylinder to respond to micro-adjustments from the mill’s automation system without overshooting the target gap.

Double-Acting Servo Architecture

The operational demands of a rolling mill require active force in both directions. While the primary load is compressive (resisting the separation force), the cylinder must also actively retract to open the gap for roll changes or strip threading. We utilize a double-acting piston design with specific area ratios optimized for the specific servo-valve characteristics. This balance is critical to prevent cavitation during high-speed retraction and to ensure that the system’s natural frequency remains high enough to avoid resonance with the mill stand’s vibration frequencies.

Integrated Position Sensing

A “Blind” cylinder is useless in AGC applications. Our cylinders are engineered to house high-precision Magnetostrictive displacement sensors internally. The piston rod is deep-drilled to accommodate the sensor probe, protecting it from the harsh external environment of steam, scale, and oil. This internal integration allows for closed-loop position feedback with resolution down to 1 micrometer (0.001mm), enabling the mill control system to maintain strip thickness tolerance within strict international standards.

Metallurgy Meets Hydraulics

The environment directly below a strip of red-hot steel is aggressive. Ambient temperatures can reach 120°C, and the air is filled with abrasive iron oxide scale and cooling water. Standard carbon steel rods will corrode and score within weeks.

Our manufacturing process utilizes 42CrMo4 (AISI 4140) Alloy Steel for both the barrel and the rod. This quenched and tempered material provides the tensile yield strength necessary to resist “ballooning” under pressure spikes.

Surface Treatment Strategy

We apply a multi-layer Heavy Duty Hard Chrome plating (minimum 50 microns) followed by precision polishing to Ra 0.2. For extreme environments, we offer Laser Cladding (Ceramic coating), which increases surface hardness to HRC 60+, rendering the rod virtually immune to scale damage.

Revitalizing a 1450mm Hot Strip Mill

Tantangannya: A major steel producer in Vietnam was experiencing significant “Head-End” gauge deviation on their finishing stands F5 and F6. The existing AGC cylinders, installed 15 years prior, suffered from internal bypass leakage and significant hysteresis, causing the control loop to oscillate.

Solusinya: Ever-Power engineered a drop-in replacement set of 850mm Bore Servo Cylinders. We upgraded the sealing system to a zero-leakage, low-friction configuration and integrated a newer generation of digital position sensors.

Hasilnya: After installation and tuning, the mill achieved a 45% reduction in gauge deviation during the critical first 5 seconds of threading. The maintenance interval for seal replacement extended from 6 months to 24 months.

“The response time of these cylinders is phenomenal. We can run harder grades of steel without losing gauge control.”

“The custom mounting dimensions were perfect. No on-site machining was required.”

“Cost-effective compared to European OEMs, but the performance data is identical.”

Diverse Metallurgical Applications

Application of hydraulic cylinders in metal processing

While primarily used in Hot and Cold Strip Mills, our servo-cylinder technology is equally critical in Plate Mills, Steckel Mills, and high-speed Wire Rod block shears. The robust design allows for installation in the “dirty” zones of the mill where water spray and scale buildup are constant threats.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

What is the typical lifespan of an AGC cylinder in a hot strip mill?

With proper maintenance and oil cleanliness (NAS 7 or better), our cylinders typically operate for 3 to 5 years before requiring a major seal overhaul. However, the rod surface can last much longer depending on the coating selected.

Can you retrofit displacement sensors into cylinders that didn’t originally have them?

Yes, we can. This usually involves manufacturing a new piston rod with a deep-drilled core to accept the probe. This is a common upgrade to modernize older manual mills into semi-automatic control systems.

How do you prevent hydraulic fluid contamination in such a dirty environment?

We use a redundant wiper system. The primary wiper is metallic (brass or scraper) to remove heavy scale, followed by a secondary soft wiper to remove fine dust and moisture, protecting the main rod seal.

What information do I need to provide to get a quote for a replacement cylinder?

Ideally, provide the OEM part number or a technical drawing. If those aren’t available, we need the Bore, Rod diameter, Stroke, Mounting style, and Working Pressure. Photos of the existing unit are also very helpful.

Do you ship these heavy hydraulic cylinders internationally from China?

Yes, we export globally. We use reinforced steel crates for packaging to ensure the cylinders withstand ocean freight without damage. We handle all logistics including DDP terms if required.
